This 2 hour workshop looks at how school exclusions change the path of young people’s life outcomes focusing on the story of Professor William (Lez) Henry.
Professor Lez Henry is William Henry was born in Lewisham of Jamaican parents. Although a naturally talented person from a young age (he and his brother were both tested academically suitable enough to go to a local grammar school), he was institutionally forced to go to the local comprehensive school.
He ended up getting permanently excluded.
This session explores how Professor Henry felt this happened, including institutionalised racism. How he received support from Youth Work and how he ended up becoming a Professor.
This session will be a chance for us to reflect, to look at some of the practices and assumptions which led to the exclusion and how we can learn from this experience when we are working with our young people.
This event is FREE to Professionals (including volunteers) who work with young people in Enfield and Haringey.
